News Coverage after Terri Schiavo’s Death
Ilana Mercer, Mar 26 ’05: As She Lay Dying
Butler Shaffer, Mar 29 ’05: More on the Schiavo case
Karen De Coster, Mar 29 ’05: Schiavo’s Husband as Power-of-Attorney
Thomas DiLorenzo, Mar 28 ’05: What Would Jefferson Say?
“The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government.”
Now I’ll spoil the quotation, which would have a clearer meaning in the context of Jefferson’s other statements. I like it, but I would replace the word “care” with “protection” and limit the protection to “human life” instead of adding “happiness”. If you take the quote too literally, you would end up with the government getting involved in managing the literal happiness of individuals, so we would have a Brave New World kind of tyranny, and I’m sure that’s not what Jefferson meant.
Thomas DiLorenzo, Mar 30 ’05: re: Shiavo and the Pope
Ron Paul M.D., Mar 29 ’05: Pro-Life Politics?
“So it is a mistake to assume that a pro-life culture develops through political persuasion or government power. Respect for human life originates with individuals acting according to their consciences. A pro-life conscience is fostered by religion, family, and ethics, not government.”
Christopher Manion, Mar 29 ’05: The Euthanasia State
***Mitchell S. Felder, M.D., Mar 31 ’05: The Terri Schiavo Tragedy***
“As a board certified attending neurologist, I would immediately question the constant refrain during this tragedy that “Terri didn’t feel a thing” during her forced starvation. I would contend that the opposite is much more likely.”
***Nat Hentoff, Mar 29 ’05: Terri Schiavo: Judicial Murder***
“Her crime was being disabled, voiceless, and at the disposal of our media.”
“…I will be returning to the legacy of Terri Schiavo in the weeks ahead because there will certainly be long-term reverberations from this case and its fracturing of the rule of law in the Florida courts and then the federal courts – as well as the disgracefully ignorant coverage of the case by the great majority of the media… “
“Terri Schiavo has never had an MRI or a PET scan, nor a thorough neurological examination….”
“…Do you know that nearly every major disability rights organization in the country has filed a legal brief in support of Terri’s right to live? “
Covers the charges against her husband that the media ignored. Her mental state was disputed. Due process was not followed. She had no legal representation. She was not on life support. The courts ordered that no attempt be made to provide her water or food by mouth! Contains a description of death by dehydration, which is terrible.
I’m glad to see that some on the “Left” like Henthoff and Nader are able to see the injustice here. The words “Right” and “Left” in a political context are now officially meaningless.
“In this country, even condemned serial killers are not executed in this way.”
