May 29/02: What price the American empire? by Pat Buchanan

…”In all these atrocities, terror was a weapon of the weak and stateless against Western powers they could not defeat with arms. In each case, terror was used to expel an imperial power or drive out foreign troops. In each case but one, terror ended when the Western power went home.

“The dynamiting of the King David Hotel convinced the British to accelerate their departure from Palestine. Zionist terror ended. Mau Mau terror ended when the Brits left Kenya. When De Gaulle cut Algeria loose, FLN terror ended. When Reagan withdrew his Marines from Beirut, anti-American terror ended in Lebanon.

Jan 31/03: Bush Approves Nuclear Response

“A similar statement is included in the public version of the directive, which was released Dec. 11 as the National Strategy to Combat Weapons of Mass Destruction and closely parallels the classified document. However, instead of the phrase “including potentially nuclear weapons,” the public text says, “including through resort to all of our options.””

…”The question is, one former official said, whether any nuclear response is proportionate to any non-nuclear attack.” (3)

The American government and media pretend these weak nations like Iraq are a serious threat similar to the old Soviet Union. This is all delusional. The American government has lost its perspective, and Canada should pull out of N.A.T.O. If U.S. aggression escalates to the point where they use nuclear weapons, many of us will be deeply ashamed of our alliance with the U.S.

The Cold War is over. It is time to “grow up” as Deputy Prime Minister John Manley puts it, but not in the way he means – Manley means “grow up and suck up”. (4)

On the contrary, it is time for the Canadian government to stand up for what is right, to stop revolving around America, to stop its own liberal “we know best” meddling in other nations, and its blind infatuation with the U.N. It is time for Americans and “pro-American” Canadians (whatever that means) to stop rationalizing the brutality of the U.S. government.

“Thus, like credulous democrats everywhere, the good American needs to rationalize his government’s actions, lest he reckon himself a thief and a murderer.” (5)

Jan 30/03 Mandela: U.S. wants holocaust
“Former South African president was applauded for anti-war comments”
But the following comments weaken the case against war: “Mandela said he would support without reservation any action agreed upon by the United Nations against Iraq, …” (6)

Shouldn’t it be about whether a war is justified or not? Are nations abandoning their decision-making to the U.N. just as individuals hand over their lives to the government? At least the U.N. seems to be against the war – for the moment.

Anti-war opinion from Toronto: We must give peace a chance
“Ottawa must pursue principled negotiations that insist on peaceful resolutions, instead of inexcusable war with its horrific environmental destruction, enormous suffering, and thousands of deaths.” (7)
