Hierarchy of Concerns
Mar 27/03 Who’s Conservative? by Thomas E. Woods, Jr.
I don’t know if he is being fair to the Enlightenment, but the basic idea holds for both believers and unbelievers.
“St. Thomas Aquinas had this to say in support of patriotism [which I define as loving your country, not its government] and against the suggestion that all people everywhere have an equal claim on our sympathy and assistance: “Our parents and our country are the sources of our being and education. It is they that have given us birth and nurtured us in our infant years. Consequently, after his duties toward God, man owes most to his parents and his country…”” (1)
For example, Canadians should not “support America” by following its example of wasting lives and resources in foreign wars to “help” other nations by bombing and invading. That is not loving your country. And Canadian conservatives should stop pretending that the U.S. is some ideal home of freedom. Stop believing the propaganda.
