Commentary on Brave New World by Aldous Huxley – Part 10
Media Propaganda
Tools of propaganda in the “brave new world” include television, newspapers, “feelies”, and music (p. 59). There are bureaus of propaganda and a College of Emotional Engineering (p. 58).
A New Religion and Unity Rituals
In addition to “Community Sings”, there is a form of religious service called “Solidarity Services” which involve the use of the soma drug, music, dancing, and sex. Each group consists of 12 people who regularly participate together in an intense charismatic ritualistic experience in an effort to achieve a feeling of mindless unity. This unity they try to attain seems to be personalized as a Savior, or Messiah, or God.
Their drinking of soma is analogous, in my opinion, to how Christians drink wine in Communion cereomonies. However, in this case, each participant says, “I drink to my annihilation” (p. 72).
The drug induces a feeling (not the reality) of universal benevolence (p. 73). This orgy of drugs, frenzied slogans, and sex is a collectivist ritual that elevates the group so-called mind or the hive mind and diminishes the individual mind.
So we are talking about a society that promotes the complete obliteration of the individual’s identity and independence as a conscious thinking entity.
Why? Well, obviously so that each is obedient to the State and follows mindlessly along with everything they are told. Most religious institutions serve the agenda of government, and the purpose of government is to reduce human beings to the level of slaves who do not see it as their role in life to have their own thoughts about anything of importance. The “important” decisions are for their masters.
Having our own thoughts isn’t obedience and so it’s not “unity” and it’s certainly not “peace” for those who want to dominate us without opposition. When people talk about “oneness”, possibly there is a legitimate discussion we could have about “oneness” and “unity”–possibly they have their place in our lives day to day–but my alarm bells go off. I think I know the purpose of most of the talk we hear about “oneness” and letting go of the “ego”. Most of this is about compliance to so-called authority–for the convenience of those “in charge”–so that we can be herded into the barn or off a cliff, or into pits like animals.

Related to that, please note that Carroll Quigley, author of Tragedy and Hope also referred to a world feudal system controlled by banks and corporations. In a feudal system, everyone “knows their place” like the bees in a beehive, like the ants in an anthill, like most of us in the 21st century who are trained to focus on trivia and not talk about anything of importance–believing for some reason that the little we do have we’ll somehow be allowed to hold onto. Where do we get that idea? If you’re handing over your dignity at airports just to travel, what else are you going to hand over? Where are your boundaries and limits?
