A Foundation for Farming Reform
In 2006, the Rockefeller Foundation partnered with The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to create the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), an Africa-based and African-led organization committed to sustainably increasing the productivity and profitability of small-scale farms across Africa. Chaired by former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and working in 13 count-tries, 5AGRA’s concerted, system-wide approach has led to tremendous gains in the quantity and quality of crops by producing new seed varieties, new systems of water management and enhanced soil fertility, and more recently a Market Access Program enabling smallholders to better market what they produce.
