Liberty & War – Iraq War, rhetoric about World War IV, Canadian Alliance anti-war politician Keith Martin (2003)

1954: “[Freeman] Chodorov replied that communism was an idea, immune to killing by military means. We could only kill “natives” who happened to believe in that unworkable idea–if, for example, we should ever be so foolish as to “send an army into Indochina.” No, we should stand firm for private property and freedom “and let all natives live.””(1)
April 4, 2003 World War IV – Has it arrived?
by Justin Raimondo
“…Bill Clinton’s former CIA director, William Woolsey, declared that “the United States is engaged in World War IV, and that it could continue for years.”
“…That an extremist pining for a new world war is being seriously considered for the job of American viceroy in occupied Iraq is the final proof that the neocons have won – and that we have good reason to be nervous.” (2)
April 3, 2003 Ex-CIA director: U.S. faces ‘World War IV’
“Former CIA Director James Woolsey said Wednesday the United States is engaged in World War IV, and that it could continue for years.”
“In the address to a group of college students, Woolsey described the Cold War as the third world war and said “This fourth world war, I think, will last considerably longer than either World Wars I or II did for us. Hopefully not the full four-plus decades of the Cold War.”
“…He said the new war is actually against three enemies: the religious rulers of Iran, the “fascists” of Iraq and Syria, and Islamic extremists like al Qaeda.”
He makes the groundless claim:
“…all three enemies have waged war against the United States for several years but the United States has just “finally noticed.”” (3)
You think people would have noticed if the first two groups had been making war on the U.S.! Maybe they were “making war” with their thoughts!
So when is the U.S. planning to get out of the Middle East so we don’t have to listen to this nonsense about World War IV for the rest of our lives? When is the U.S. going to run out of imperfect “enemies” who do things differently and want to maintain their independence? There is no need for this. It is not your world. Get out of it.
April 3, 2003 A strategic blunder? by Paul Craig Roberts
“Muslims see the invasion of Iraq not as liberation but as conquest and re-colonization.” (4)
April 4, 2003 Ambivalence Of War by Charley Reese
“In these Orwellian times, governments and corporations go to extraordinary lengths to disguise reality.” (5)
April 2, 2003 The flowering of fascism: Silencing dissent is extremist and un-American by John Sugg
“We are demanding that other nations — Canada, for example — “muzzle anti-U.S. sentiment.”” (6)
Anti-war Right: Canadian Alliance M.P. Spoke Against the War
February 24, 2003 Containment, Not Conflict
by Dr. Keith Martin, M.D., M.P.
(Doc file opens in Wordpad)
“…Large numbers of indoctrinated youths would swell bin Laden’s camp, and we could expect more terrorist activities against us.”
“…This battle cannot be won through conventional means.”
“…The US, for its part, must also be seen to be even-handed on the Israeli/Palestinian question.”
“…The sanctions that prevent the Iraqi people from providing for their basic needs must be dropped.”
“…Unless the people of Iraq can become self sufficient, they will never be able to rise up against their tyrannical leader.” [Criticizing sanctions, pre-invasion comments of course.]
“…In political circles, debate has largely been quashed on the legitimacy of this approach. This cannot continue. Canada has a duty to the US as a friend to express misgivings, and provide alternatives that can meet the very legitimate security concerns we all share.”(7)
I thought Keith Martin of the Canadian Alliance might have spoken out against this war and so he did – in a carefully worded but clear statement. I’m relieved that the Canadian Alliance Party has this guy. He has also taken an admirable stance on other issues such as decriminalizing marijuana.
