Ontario’s war on coal almost complete – last two coal plants
Ontario Phases Out Coal-Fired Power
ClimateWire, www.scientificamerican.com | January 11, 2013
‘…Yesterday, the province announced that its last two large coal units will close before 2014, making more than 99 percent of the province’s electricity generated from non-coal sources. It is a major shift for Ontario, which fired 25 percent of its grid from coal a decade ago.
‘Additionally, new natural gas plants are supplying much of the power formerly provided from coal generation, Weis said….’
‘The coal ban runs a risk of eventually raising electricity prices, said Dave Butler, executive director of the Canadian Clean Power Coalition, which represents electricity producers. It also could have an immediate effect on jobs, considering that several hundred workers are employed at Nanticoke and Lambert, he said…’
‘The Canadian national regulations go a step further than U.S. EPA rules in requiring existing coal plants to eventually match the greenhouse emissions profile of natural gas plants — a requirement that can only be met via yet-to-be-proved carbon capture technology …
So the federal government has been part of this, even under the so-called “Conservative” Party. So all of the political parties just go along with the same big agenda.
Ontario coal-burning power plants to close this year

‘… Closing the coal plants had been one of the Ontario Liberals’ signature promises, which they used to differentiate themselves from the Progressive Conservatives in the 2003 election.
‘“We’ll replace our dirty, outdated coal-fired electricity plants — the biggest source of air pollution in Canada — with cleaner burning natural gas, and renewable energy such as wind and solar,” McGuinty had vowed during the campaign…’
‘While they struggled with the coal deadline, the Liberals passed the Green Energy Act …
‘The result was a steady decline in coal’s share of Ontario’s power sector. Coal plants produced 25 per cent of Ontario’s power in 2003 when the Liberals took office. By last year, coal’s share had slipped just behind wind, which produced 3 per cent of Ontario’s electricity, according to the Independent Electricity System Operator.’
From 2010: Four more Ontario coal-fired generating units shut down

This is the picture now:
Ontario’s Energy Output by Fuel Type (2012) (chart)
- Nuclear: 56.4%
- Hydro: 22.3%
- Natural Gas: 14.6%
- Coal: 2.8% (big drop)
- Wind: 3.0% (Yeah, right! Not viable.)
So now we’re more dependent than ever on nuclear!
We should have diverse sources of energy to keep prices down in case some of these sources fail or become too expensive.
We should tell governments to stop harassing us with their windmill scam (not unique to Ontario at all, because all policies are global) and their unscientific belief system about “carbon emissions” causing global warming.
Tell politicians – all parties – to put the coal plants back on line with the latest technology for removing actual toxins.
Restore jobs and industry in Ontario through reducing taxes and regulations.
We don’t want a post-industrial world, extremists.
We want the hospitals functioning. We want the lights on. We want our homes heated.
We don’t want austerity.
We don’t want carbon taxes like they have in Europe and B.C.
We want freedom.
Is it a lucky coincidence that natural gas prices are artificially low because of the controversial trendy new “fracking” method? How long will cheap natural gas prices last?
So much of the (World Wildlife Fund) legislation in Ontario over the last decade attacks property rights and freedoms. Shutting down coal attacks our electricity bills and our independence!
These policies are for the deindustrialization of Canada and other countries that used to have more respect for freedoms and rights. These policies are for the creation of an impoverished post-consumer society spelled out again at the Rio+20 summit which was the 20th anniversary of the 1992 Agenda 21 agreement and climate change treaty.
Consumption is to be regulated using the made-up excuse of “man-made climate change” so that we are forced to pay for “carbon emissions”. Life-sustaining carbon dioxide – which plants require – is attacked as if it is evil. Meanwhile the earth hasn’t warmed in 18+ years! So much for that!
