Policy themes of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World
Part 1: “Apocalypse” Scares, World Government, Regions, “Community”
By Alan
This is a revised version of my original post published on October 24, 2015 at CanadianLiberty.com. Series contents: http://powerandreality.com/policy-themes-of-aldous-huxleys-brave-new-world-series-contents/
Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World was originally published in 1932. Any page numbers for this commentary come from a Flamingo edition published in 1994.
My previous commentary on Brave New World is here: https://canadianliberty.com/?p=17829. Also see my notes on Huxley’s non-fiction work, Brave New World Revisited: https://canadianliberty.com/?p=17795.
The purpose of the current series is to draw parallels between the novel’s themes and real-life events or trends.
A. Scenario in Brave New World: World Government in Ten Regions
Aldous Huxley’s novel, Brave New World, refers to the “planetary motto” or “World State’s motto, COMMUNITY, IDENTITY, STABILITY” (Chapter 1, pages 1, 5).
In addition, one of the novel’s characters, Mustapha Mond, is described as “Resident Controller for Western Europe” and as one of the “Ten World Controllers” (Chapter 3, page 29).
Progress Towards World Government in Liberal Party of Canada Policy Document
We can point to evidence of progress towards world government in modern events and policies.
The 2015 policy document, RealChange: A New Plan for a Strong Middle Class, (found at https://www.liberal.ca/files/2015/10/New-plan-for-a-strong-middle-class.pdf) of the recently elected Liberal Party of Canada contains the following points about their commitment to globalist institutions and policies.
These include organizations such as the United Nations and G20, the climate change doctrine, carbon taxes and “low carbon economy,” and also to sovereignty-shredding, international “free trade” agreements–such as the TPP, which was being promoted even when nobody was allowed to read it: https://canadianliberty.com/?p=22721.
Page 39:
We will instead partner with provincial and territorial leaders to develop real climate change solutions, consistent with our international obligations to protect the planet, all while growing our economy. Together, we will attend the Paris climate conference, and within 90 days formally meet to establish a pan-Canadian framework for combatting climate change.
They plan to “protect the planet” while “growing” our economy at the same time! What an amazing contradiction. Notice the term “international obligations,” even though Canada is supposedly a democracy in which we vote for representatives who make decisions on behalf of this nation. Aren’t “obligations” to serve the best interests of Canadians more important? Is it in our best interests to have our access to energy and other resources rationed for this “protect the planet” belief? How crazy do you have to be?
Page 40:
We will work together to establish national emissions-reduction targets, and ensure that the provinces and territories have targeted federal funding and the flexibility to design their own policies to meet these commitments, including their own carbon pricing policies.
Suddenly we won’t need so much emissions-generating fuel anymore for heat, travel or business! Since someone has indoctrinated us with the correct belief system, repeating empty slogans about “climate change” and how “the science is settled” over and over will justify the sacrifices we’ll have to make–if we just “think positive” and take our meds. Usually people feel they are in debt and have to spend too much for necessities, but evidently many Canadians have thought it all through (!) and are looking forward to paying more for EVERYTHING in order to “save the planet.” Remember that we’re supposed to focus on the whole “planet” nowadays–leading up to world government. We’re trained to feel guilty if we don’t.
These targets must recognise the economic cost and catastrophic impact that a greater-than-two-degree increase in average global temperatures would represent, as well as the need for Canada to do its part to prevent that from happening.
Notice that the wording uses the conditional tense (would) and cleverly avoids saying that there is any actual increase in average “global” temperatures (never mind two degrees). Instead, a scare-mongering, evidence-free, groundless, and nonsensical sci-fi scenario is presented in order to justify a transfer of power to a global government structure in which Canada does “its part.”
Partnering with the provinces and territories, we will create a new Low Carbon Economy Trust. The Trust will provide funding to projects that materially reduce carbon emissions under the new pan-Canadian framework. We will endow the Low Carbon Economy Trust with $2 billion in our mandate.
Who needs carbon other than every living thing, including human beings? Plants need carbon dioxide to live. Doesn’t that mean that more carbon dioxide would actually be good for life?
Every carbon fuel produces water vapor and carbon dioxide. Is water vapor bad too? No? But isn’t it a “greenhouse gas” also (https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/monitoring-references/faq/greenhouse-gases.php)? You couldn’t convince anyone that water vapor is bad, could you, but it doesn’t contain carbon! What’s next on the stupid list? “Hydrogen emissions”?
Do we normally think of a greenhouse as a bad thing? No! because it’s a good thing for food production to keep the vegetables from freezing. You really have to work that propaganda lever hard, boy.
Again, who needs so much fuel!? Don’t we? Isn’t it great that Ontario shut down most of the coal power generating stations instead of making them cleaner, thus making the energy supply scarcer? Isn’t that fantastic? No?
Who needs energy? Who needs factories? Who needs cars? Who needs to make anything? Who needs industry? Apparently we don’t according to the climate priesthood and their political mercenaries.
Obviously we don’t need anything so much now thanks to all these job-destroying, factory-transferring “trade agreements.” We should sacrifice our standard of living even more and just do our part for the world government. We should just do what we’re told because “it is what it is”. I don’t know what kind of future that is for people to give their children, because it contradicts everything else they do in terms of providing for their needs. Why did you teach your children how to deal with money or invest in a good career? So they can have their income and spending power drained away on carbon taxes? You let them be indoctrinated by their school and the media to just throw away whatever standard of living you had. We’ve all been trained to OBEY. Are your children going to be “saved” this way?
We will protect our communities from the challenges of climate change and grow our economy by making significant new investments in green infrastructure.
Green energy refers to mythical (minuscule) energy sources such as windmills. I wonder how they make windmills and solar panels without fuel-burning generators–not! Isn’t it great that we’re paying through government to artificially subsidize relatively non-productive sources of energy to make other people rich? Isn’t that selfless of us?
We will fulfill our G20 commitment and phase out subsidies for the fossil fuel industry over the medium-term.
Did you know the Canadian government had a “G20 commitment”? Don’t you all remember voting at the last G20 meeting? Don’t remember any such thing? I don’t remember authorizing any such commitment, whether I agreed with it or not. Obviously people should only get rich from taxes for erecting windmills and not from producing real “fossil fuel” energy that can keeps the hospitals and factories running. “Less is more!”
We will also work in partnership with the United States and Mexico to develop an ambitious North American clean energy and environmental agreement (page 40).
I wasn’t told about the “North American” constitution! Did the public get a vote in the “partnership”? How do we keep up with this “partnership” thing going on among “independent” governments? Someday maybe they’ll let us vote specifically on this issue, but I guess it’s too important to let us do that until they’ve saved the planet from the evil carbon dioxide (which we exhale, and which is actually good and necessary for plant life and therefore good for us also).
Page 67:
Properly negotiated and implemented, free trade agreements are good for the Canadian economy. We will carefully consider all trade opportunities currently open to Canada, and explore deeper trade relationships with emerging and established markets, including China and India.
Someone please prove that trade deals such as NAFTA, the TPP and the many others are good for CANADIANS and the Canadian economy. I don’t see how the logic stacks up. Besides the fact that they erode national laws and build world government, how do they not drive jobs overseas and lower wages and standards to the lowest common denominator? Am I being too “left wing” to say that? Is that an argument?
Whether or not particular industries benefit from some changes, how are these trade deals good for the economy overall? Shouldn’t the economy be for our benefit? Are we supposed to continue living in Canada, or do the corporations who negotiate these trade agreements want us to move?
The key (as with the climate change arrangements) is that people want to believe that these trade deals–which they’re not allowed to even read until the last minute–are built on good, nation-loving, people-loving intentions. To believe that the intentions are otherwise is outside of acceptable opinion. Therefore they must be good. It’s just that they’re secret (at least for a long time while fake journalists just promote them as “free trade”), and they erode sovereignty and domestic laws and set up tribunals that automatically divert penalties from the nation’s treasury (https://canadianliberty.com/?p=22596). Otherwise they “must be good,” because hundreds of politicians wouldn’t let their party leaders sign them at high-pressure international meetings–right?–since they are devoted to their fellow Canadians and not to endless international negotiations for world government!?
Page 69:
We will recommit to supporting international peace operations with the United Nations, and will make our specialized capabilities – from mobile medical teams to engineering support to aircraft that can carry supplies and personnel – available on a case-by-case basis.
To help the UN respond more quickly to emerging and escalating conflicts, we will provide well-trained personnel that can be quickly deployed, including mission commanders, staff officers, and headquarters units.
This is the “liberal” version of militarism, the friendlier-than-neocon way of using every possible foreign conflict (genuine or provocateured) as a justification for military intervention and getting your foot in the door. The “Right to Protect” (R2P) doctrine is one of these excuses for imperialism (https://www.opencanada.org/features/r2p-at-10-looking-beyond-military-intervention/). The military side of things (with a humanitarian mask or otherwise) is part of the process of building a world government. As far as I can see, the whole “security” and foreign policy system we live in is built on declarations about reality which substitute for reality: image and words substitute for substance. There are many incidents, false flags or otherwise, but the propaganda used to justify the atrocities of the Libyan invasion, for example, is a bunch of nonsense that can’t survive twenty seconds of examination. That doesn’t change the effectiveness of the emotionally manipulative and intimidating, Orwellian-spewing media “presstitutes” who are backed by the terror of their Gitmo-operating, post-9/11 Big Brother. How would we understand the world properly without the media telling us how to think in an assertive, preachy tone of intimidation and correctness. We’re so impressed with the media.
B. Propaganda about “Community”
Communitarianism
“Community” is part of the World State’s Motto in the novel, which reminds us of the many references we hear to the term “community” in political propaganda. “Community” can be perceived as a good thing, so it can be easily used without arousing suspicion that the intent is collectivist, fascist and totalitarian. There is a reference for communitarian ideas at the Institute for Communitarian Policy Studies here: http://icps.gwu.edu/communitarianism at the George Washington University website.
Another random article on the same website, “Earth Month 2015” (http://sustainability.gwu.edu/earth-month-2015) includes an event called “Equitable Development in DC: Sustainability from Below.” This event was held on March 26, 2015 by “Organizing Neighborhood Equity (ONE DC) and The George Washington University – Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service and Department of Sociology” (http://www.eventbrite.com/e/equitable-development-in-dc-sustainability-from-below-tickets-15951673886).
We will discuss and debate national strategies and local initiatives to practice democratic economics in our communities. Our goal is to stimulate action to create the communities we envision.
This kind of terminology is all over the place. “WE” are where you live, and “WE” have been busy in “OUR” communities!
The Earth Charter: global and local community
The Earth Charter (see https://canadianliberty.com/?p=22079 and http://www.earthcharterinaction.org/content/pages/Read-the-Charter.html ), developed after the 1992 Earth Summit, uses the terms “community” or “communities” seventeen times. The globalist and collectivist doctrine is expressed in this quote:
To realize these aspirations, we must decide to live with a sense of universal responsibility, identifying ourselves with the whole Earth community as well as our local communities. We are at once citizens of different nations and of one world in which the local and global are linked.
Two key participants in developing the Earth Charter were businessman socialist Maurice Strong of Canada (Privy Council) and Mikhail Gorbachev, former Soviet leader (see http://www.earthcharterinaction.org/invent/images/uploads/ENG-Vilela.pdf). To me, this represents the kind of merger that is similar to how the “capitalist” and “communist” systems are combined in the Brave New World dictatorship. This merger of capitalism and communism is indicated by the last names used in Huxley’s novel.
For example,
- Ford, referring to Henry Ford, the automobile manufacturer, is used constantly as the starting date for the whole society, as in “Our Ford” (Chapter 3). It is also used in the phrase “his fordship” (Chapter 3), as a curse word (Chapter 3), and as a holiday, “Ford’s Day” (Chapter 5, Section 2).
- Bernard Marx (Chapter 3).
- Polly Trotsky (Chapter 3).
- Helmholtz Watson (Chapter 4, Section 2).
- Benito Hoover (Chapter 4, Section 2).
- Morgana Rothschild (Chapter 5, Section 2).
Note that Norman Dodd of the 1950s Reece Committee (a U.S. Congressional Committee) claimed he was told by the Ford Foundation that their purpose was to eventually merge the American and Soviet systems. Videos of these remarks can be found on YouTube currently (see https://canadianliberty.com/?p=18383).
The Earth Summit: Agenda 21
The words “community” and “communities” are used 445 times in the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit document, “Agenda 21”. See http://www.un.org/esa/sustdev/documents/agenda21/english/Agenda21.pdf.
Governments, corporations and their NGOs have been following Agenda 21 ever since in countless “local communities,” with endless “visions” of “sustainability.” The 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was drawn up at the same time (https://unfccc.int/resource/docs/convkp/conveng.pdf).
Clinton’s Communitarian Speech
President William J. Clinton used the term “communitarian” in a May 20, 1995 speech. See http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=51393&st=communitarian&st1=
Clinton starts off by thanking Dr. Etzioni, the head of the Institute for Communitarian Policy Studies (mentioned above) and the author of The Spirit of Community.
Clinton’s speech is about “character building” or “character education,” which is part of
the larger strategy toward a new communitarian vision for our country.
His anti-terrorist legislation in light of the Oklahoma City bombing fits in this context:
I have asked Congress to pass this anti-terrorism legislation to give me both people and technological tools—not to me but to me being the United States, to us—to deal with the technological and organizational realities of the modern terrorist threat . . .
There are several sentences about Americans DOING WHAT THEY’RE SUPPOSED TO DO, which captures the essence of the communitarian “philosophy”. And he praises them for being so good despite the fact their world is being constantly turned upside down (by mysterious forces of change):
Most of our fellow citizens do everything they’re supposed to do pretty much when they’re supposed to do it, even things they find most distasteful, like paying their taxes . . .
. . . this is a very great country full of very good people and almost all of us get up every day and do what we’re supposed to do as best we can; that there are new and different challenges we face today that put extreme pressure on us in trying to do good and be good, pressure in the family, pressure in the workplace, pressure in the community and in the larger society; that we are trying to cope with economic and social stresses and with the exposure to all kinds of forces in a complex modern world that we often were not exposed to in the past and that none of—some of us had never been exposed to before.
. . . But we plainly live in a world that is changing so fast, where people are exposed to so many forces, that the ties that bind us are stretched more than there were in the world in which I grew up. I don’t think there’s any question about that. The opportunities for individuals to have their internal equilibrium upset are far greater today than they were a generation ago.
. . . Religious and community institutions have an important role to play. . . .
(Re-reading this in 2017, the concept of trauma-based mind control comes to mind).
He doesn’t explain where all these forces of change come from, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s people like him (“liberal” or not) who were and are busy implementing the changes–from social engineering on the family structure, to “anti-terrorism,” to “free trade” agreements, to Agenda 21.
I ran into this communitarian, government-obedience version of “character-building” and “education” when analyzing the proposed “Statue of Responsibility” project (https://canadianliberty.com/?p=18855).
Religion and Small Groups
As far as religious institutions, after reading about the use of small groups in Communist China in Jacques Ellul’s book Propaganda (https://canadianliberty.com/?p=9152), I remembered how a “small groups” ministry was introduced into our denomination in the 1990s. What could be the problem with “small groups”? I think it depends on who is behind it and how intensely it is used as a conditioning technique for indoctrination. In Huxley’s Brave New World, there are religious meetings involving small groups of twelve called “Solidarity Groups” (chapter 5, section 2). However, these Huxleyan small groups use drugs and sex.
“Character”
Why was Clinton talking about character? As indicated already, it seems to me that he is elevating a collectivist concept of obedience and the idea of going along with societal peer pressure and government edicts to do whatever is “expected” of us. And then he wants religious institutions to do their part in promoting that idea.
I also remember countless talks about “character” in church sermons. Some were probably very good, but I doubt the quality and value of many sermons because I seem to remember that most of them focused on legalistic obedience to dogma rather than on personal integrity.
Does “character” mean being herded about by bullying techniques, obeying the religious authorities, or the government and its thousands of pages of laws? No. Our whole lives shouldn’t be based on pretending that governments and other institutions are good when they’re NOT and going along with everything out of fear or out of a desire just to please people.
I think we need to define our moral positions according to rationally-defensible principles based on the value of human life and respect for free will–and not on elevating some “special” humans above ourselves–and not on elevating bugs and trees. The elevation of bugs and trees, by the way, in documents like the Earth Charter, is just a method used by the “special” humans to diminish OUR God-given rights.
It’s important to emphasize that the government and corporations–and their United Nations and G20 clubs–are not “God” and do not have the right to decide right and wrong. Since many people have allowed them to do that, however, now we have Hollywood and the U.S. government deciding that it’s acceptable to torture people in the name of the community, or “for the greater good.” This is the pig-sty of collectivism. The video games teach the kiddies their new “morality” about how to treat women (http://catalyst.ca/blog/5-marketing-lessons-launch-grand-theft-auto-v/), and good ol’ Kiefer demonstrates to them how to torture people (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_(TV_series)). Isn’t it wonderful? That’s what “free speech” is for, so that the Pentagon and CIA can brainwash you and your children your whole life long with pure evil. Is it “hate speech” to say that? And who are parents to question the military-industrial-entertainment complex (http://www.wired.com/2008/12/pentagon-holl-1/)? As good communitarians, we should be “responsible” and do what we’re “supposed” to do. How dare we criticize gruesome scenes of decapitation and torture!
What have we been left with? I think we’ve been given an ethic of running around like hamsters on a wheel, of doing what we think we are “supposed” to do, being “the best” we can be while ignoring evil, working hard, paying taxes, “making the most” of things, enduring changes in society (as Clinton mentioned), changes caused by free trade agreements and politically correct adjustments to our lives to bring us in line with what the big banks and their policy-makers want–more slaves in the workforce and less families.
What is the result of the self-help version of “character” (if I’m not being too unfair)? “Don’t be negative. Be positive.” Ignore the bad things the powers-that-be are doing. Survival of the fittest. Let the rest of the people who can’t cope with things as well as you [think you can] slide off the edge (until it reaches your level). And so they do.
Canada is more and more about living on the street–and that includes military veterans (http://www.ctvnews.ca/is-the-homeless-veteran-problem-set-to-explode-1.722350)–so much for the government CARING. And more and more of us are being marketed psychotropic drugs to help us cope (http://www.rcinet.ca/en/2013/07/28/psychiatric-drug-prescription-up-in-canada/). And we fill the cracks with slogans: “It is what it is” (https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=It+is+what+it+is&year_start=1800&year_end=2017&corpus=15&smoothing=3&share=&direct_url=t1%3B%2CIt%20is%20what%20it%20is%3B%2Cc0).
C. Reality in 2015 and Earlier: Apocalyptic and World Government Messages in the Culture and Religion
Aldous Huxley’s novel itself HAS BEEN PROMOTED–as a “warning”–but it is actually a part of our CONDITIONING from everything that I can see. So it has been part of the curricula of many schools for a long time. As a reference, see, this article for example, http://mynorthwest.com/646/391865/A-Brave-New-World-controversy. The novel is, in itself, a dystopian, apocalyptic narrative in its own way. It certainly promotes the idea of world government.
There are plenty of different propaganda messages that promote world government nowadays, but one of the most important that affects large segments of the population is end-times religious prophecy.
Without getting into the latest nonsense in detail about “Blood Moons,” etc., you may have noticed the many apocalyptic stories in entertainment nowadays, whether New Age, Christian or Zombie.
The more media technology has been available to us, the more of this we have been exposed to.
I have heard about intelligence connections to some cults. I haven’t collected the necessary evidence to prove the government and foundation links that might exist when it comes to religion in general, but I know that The Cultural Cold War by Frances Stonor Saunders has documented covert CIA involvement in the Cold War funding of art, literature and films during the Cold War. Literature included the political redefinition of “conservatism” to support big government and militarism. CIA films included those based on other apocalyptic dystopian novels such as Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm (see http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2003/mar/07/artsfeatures.georgeorwell).
Presumably a motive of these productions was to promote an anti-totalitarian message, an anti-Communist or more accurately an anti-Stalinist message. But is that the only purpose? I’m not sure that’s the effect of 1984. It’s a bleak and despairing outlook, and I think that’s what 1984 promotes. In any case, I don’t believe it’s the case with the promotion of the novel Brave New World. I also don’t believe it’s the case with The Hunger Games and many other science fiction stories. Soylent Green is another example and it includes the Brave New World themes of euthanasia and recycling humans.
The anti-totalitarian message is the superficial interpretation of these outrageous dystopias. In these cases and others, I believe there is something else going on in terms of psychological preparation and conditioning. There is a built up sense of inevitability–about new technologies, about supposed progress, and even about what is portrayed as evil tyranny. Part of the intended result has been called “predictive programming” by researchers such as Alan Watt (http://www.cuttingthroughthematrix.com).
In any case, the concept of world government (and ten regions as in Huxley’s novel) appears to be a standard concept in biblical formulas for the “end of the age.”
Apocalyptic fear-mongering, in combination with the fear of modern nuclear weapon technology, I believe, has been used in order to destabilize our society, to make it appear to many that it is supposed to be in constant change towards some potential climactic conflict between evil forces and good forces, between an evil world government (“anti-Christ” or even “alien” presence in New Age terms) and “God’s” world government.
A Brief History of the Future is a very interesting book by European banker and French government advisor, Jacques Attali. This book basically presents a bad cop-good cop, evil-good scenario of a “hyper-empire” (America run amok, actually doing all the dirty work of introducing surveillance technology and suppressing rebellions in my view), which is then followed by a “hyper-democracy” run by a group of internationalist, technocratic, transhumanist, AI-wielding saviours.
Herbert W. Armstrong, World Tomorrow, Plain Truth Magazine, Worldwide Church of God
We have to deal with the reality of what goes on, the belief systems being espoused and the conditioning of people through religious information of various kinds.
It seems to me that powerful, well-funded, mind-influencing cults have been in operation for special purposes.
In the 1980s, I encountered the organization of a powerful television, radio and print evangelist called Herbert W. Armstrong, who repeatedly referred to nuclear weapons and biblical end-times prophecies on his television program The World Tomorrow, and also on the radio and in his free literature.
This man was able to travel in his private jet to meet with world leaders in many countries such as Israel, Egypt, Jordan and China. This raises a lot of questions in my mind.
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_W._Armstrong. The intro to the following video (October 10, 1981 telecast), shows Armstrong meeting in various countries, but the rest of the video includes other footage, including his meeting with Anwar Sadat: http://www.hwalibrary.com/cgi-bin/get/hwa.cgi?action=gettcast&InfoID=1400071853
See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIt45gaJSU0 –this YouTube video of an old World Tomorrow broadcast includes graphic illustrations of Daniel 2 and 7, and Revelation 13 and 17. These passages illustrate the prophetic biblical formula (a belief system or tool used by ruling oligarchies in my opinion) of predicting the replacement of a human world government or empire (the bad guys with “ten kings” or regions) with God’s world government or kingdom (the supposed good guys).
The following quotations are based on http://gasl.org/refbib/Bible_King_James_Version.pdf and the links below should be more or less the same text.
Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. . . . This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, his legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. . . . a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. . . . and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. . . . Thou, O king, art a king of kings : for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom . . . Thou art this head of gold. And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth. And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron : forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things : and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided ; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men : but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed : and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
. . . Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings : . . . And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it : . . . . After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl ; the beast had also four heads ; and dominion was given to it. After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly ; and it had great iron teeth : it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it : and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it ; and it had ten horns. I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots : and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things. I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, . . . I beheld then, because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake : I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame. As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away : yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time. I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him : his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. . . . These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth. But the saints of the Most High shall take the kingdom, . . . Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass ; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet ; and of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell ; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows. I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the Most High ; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom. Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise : and another shall rise after them ; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. And he shall speak great words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and think to change times and laws : and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, . . . And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.
And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion : and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death ; and his deadly wound was healed : and all the world wondered after the beast. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast : and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast ? who is able to make war with him ? And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies ; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, . . .
And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them : and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb . . . And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth ; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, and deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast ; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads : and that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast : for it is the number of a man ; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
. . . . So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness : and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet-colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication : and upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, babylon the great, the mother of harlots and abominations of the earth. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. . . . I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. The beast that thou sawest was, and is not ; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition : and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. And there are seven kings : five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come ; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space. And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition. And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet ; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them : for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings : . . . And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. For God hath put in their hearts to fulfill his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled. And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.
And so we have these accounts in the Bible of a utopian world government being established (supposedly from God) after some conflict with the latest evil world empire. The “ten kings” of the evil Beast empire may seem to parallel Huxley’s dystopic world dictatorship of ten regions and “controllers.” The ten regions don’t seem to relate to the Bible’s prediction of a final world government under God and the saints. However, there is a period of conflict described in Huxley’s novel preceding the establishment of the scientific dictatorship. And there is also a period of conflict described in Attali’s book A Brief History of the Future before the establishment of a saintly “hyperdemocracy” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Brief_History_of_the_Future#Hyperdemocracy).
