I read this years ago and still like it. The basic principle is very good.

I recommend it to everyone.

But I’m not so sure Bastiat is correct about everything in all his books – like trade for example.

Even if he was correct about not letting government use protectionist measures, at least we should voluntarily stand up for our families and neighbours locally and make sure they prosper rather than go along with anti-freedom so-called “free trade” agreements that promote slavery overseas and then slavery here at home.

How can people believe in “free trade” when taxes are deducted from payroll, when there is constant propaganda (e.g. Hollywood promotion of torture) and constant warfare.

The problem is how naive and ignorant we are about the real system and the need to defend our rights and wealth in this world – our survival – and not just in an ideal imagined world that never comes.

If we don’t even recognize that there are those who destroy human values – to weaken, dis-unify and commodify us – and who already practice a form of slavery over us through government and through a fraudulent banking, currency and debt system, then we are lost.
