Canada is one of 12 countries that initialled the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in early October . . .
TPP members are now talking about signing the deal in February, a crucial step which paves the way for ratification.
The Liberal government, under pressure from labour unions fretting about what they fear will be big job losses . . . , have launched widespread consultations . . . could take considerable time . . .
“As it stands, Canada will most likely sign the treaty but won’t move to ratify it until the situation in Congress becomes clearer,” said the source.
So they probably want to sign it alright, but members of parliament, or so-called representatives of the people (I guess they’ve decided they don’t agree with the concern about job losses), following the leadership of their particular private political organizations, will wait and see what U.S. politicians want to do.
I would like to hear why the trade unions think there will be JOB LOSSES! Let’s hear more about that before we take the sucky approach of imitating whatever the U.S. Congress does. Why doesn’t the Canadian parliament decide on its own?
Current news on Trudeau’s government:
Chrystia Freeland won’t commit yet to Feb. 4 TPP signing
By Janyce McGregor, CBC News | 13 January 2016
Canada’s international trade minister says her government hasn’t decided whether it will participate in an expected signing ceremony for the Trans-Pacific Partnership in Auckland, New Zealand early next month.
- Cross-Canada consultations
- “admitting to reporters in Vancouver that her stakeholder discussions Tuesday revealed some things that were news to both her and her officials . . . not surprising since the deal was secret only until recently . . . but everyone’s just supposed to think it’s a good thing because of emotional manipulation and propaganda, and that our “leaders” are reading it, etc. It’s about “trade,” and you’re not against trade, are you?
- “In his State of the Union address Tuesday evening,” Obama urged Congress to ratify the TPP. He makes it sound like it’s about competing with China’s influence, but I really don’t believe that’s for real, especially in the long-term.
